What to know before booking your first yoga retreat

So, you’ve decided to take the plunge and book your first yoga retreat. Exciting, right? But before you hit “book now,” there are a few things you should know to ensure your retreat is everything you dream it will be. To help you prepare, we asked the experienced instructors at YogaRenew—an international leader in online yoga teacher training—for their expert advice on what to consider before booking your first yoga retreat. From understanding what you’re paying for to packing the essentials, here’s what they had to say.

1. Know What You’re Paying For

One of the most important things to clarify before booking your retreat is what exactly is included in the cost. Retreats can vary widely in what they offer, so knowing where your money is going is essential.

Patrick Franco, an experienced instructor with YogaRenew, emphasizes the importance of clarity in budgeting. “What you pay for the retreat might not cover everything, so it’s important to know what you’re paying for and not paying for! For instance, does the price include transfers to and from the airport to the resort? Or is that something you’ll have to pay out of pocket?”

He also highlights the need to be aware of additional expenses that might not be included in the retreat price: “How many meals are included? Typically, a meal plan is included, which covers some or all of your meals. However, if one or more of the meals are not included, you will need to budget for extra meals.”

Excursions and spa services are another area where costs can add up. “Many retreats include one or more excursions, but typically, there are more offered that would be at your own cost. Usually, spa services like massages are offered but not included in the retreat pricing. There are typically other excursions (depending on the location) like boat trips, hiking, snorkeling, etc., that are usually an additional cost,” Franco advises.

2. Know Who You’re Practicing With

If you’re joining a retreat hosted by your local yoga community, you probably already know the instructors and some of the attendees. But if you’re choosing a retreat based on location or timing, it’s important to research the teachers and the group you’ll be practicing with.

Franco suggests reaching out to learn more about the retreat and the people involved: “Research the teachers and their teaching style. Find out how many people are attending. Ask about the level of students attending and the level of the classes. Many retreats have a wide variety of students, but depending on your level of practice, you should check in with the teachers. Best of all, if you can get on a phone call or video chat with the retreat hosts, that would be the best way to get a feel for the retreat.”

3. Pack the Essentials

Packing for a yoga retreat might seem straightforward, but there are a few essential items you don’t want to forget. Depending on the retreat, yoga props might be limited, so bringing your own can make a big difference.

“You’re going on a yoga retreat, so it’s a good idea to bring a yoga mat! The yoga prop situation at yoga retreats typically leaves a lot to be desired. If you are a student who prides yourself on the use of yoga props or is particular about the types of yoga mats you like to practice on, try to bring your own yoga mat, blocks, or any other essential equipment you know you can’t live without,” says Lindsay Monal, another YogaRenew instructor.

Monal also recommends thinking carefully about what else you might need for your comfort: “This goes for personal care items and clothing, too! Be sure to pack clothes you can move in and bring any meditation items or toiletries essential to your well-being.”

4. Be Ready to Share

One of the most rewarding aspects of a yoga retreat is the chance to connect with others who share your interests. However, it’s important to be open to the experience, even if it means stepping outside your comfort zone.

“Being on a yoga retreat is also having the opportunity to interact with new people. The good news is that you know at least they are like-minded because you’re all on the same retreat. Be open to meeting new people, making new friends, sharing experiences, and possibly having a room with a stranger if you attend solo. Not everyone will become your best friend, but be open to making some new friends!” Monal advises.

5. Be Ready to Go With the Flow

Traveling in a group can present its own challenges, and flexibility is key to making the most of your retreat experience.

“Traveling in a large group can be challenging. Be patient with flight delays, changes in schedules, and other unexpected changes. Part of being on a retreat is going with the flow. If you are willing to let go and be in the moment, your experience will be much more fulfilling,” says Franco.

6. Plan to Disconnect

One of the greatest gifts a yoga retreat offers is the chance to unplug from the demands of daily life and reconnect with yourself. It’s an opportunity to step away from screens and focus on being present.

“A yoga retreat is a great opportunity to take time away from your normal routine and devices. Give yourself the gift of being present and commit to being part of the experience. This is a great time to reconnect with nature, yourself, and your well-being. Take advantage of the time away from work, family, and daily life, and take this time to prioritize your self-care,” Monal encourages.

Booking your first yoga retreat is an exciting journey. By understanding what’s included, researching your instructors, packing thoughtfully, and being open to the experience, you’ll set yourself up for an enjoyable and transformative retreat.
